Post 3:  Life on Land

One of the SDG goals is Life on Land, they defined it as" Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss" (Forests, desertification, and biodiversity, 2021) it is an important goal because life of all beings depends on earth.  All creatures depend on the earth because it provides them with food, clean water, sunlight, and air. Therefore, it is our duty to help achieve the SDG goal to save the environment.

Over the years, humans have harmed the environment, even if it was not their intention to do so. There are many activities that people have done that have caused environmental destruction, such as pollutions. " Air is arguably the most polluted with the US producing 147 million metric tons of air pollution each year alone. In 1950, smog was so bad in LA that the ground-level ozone (atmospheric gas that is great in the atmosphere, not so much on the ground) surpassed 500 parts per billion volume (ppbv)- well above the National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 75 ppbv (6.6 times more to be precise)" (Vyas, Papadopoulos, Loeffler and Williams, 2021). Overpopulation is essential as well in damaging the environment because it causes habitat loss " Rainforests once covered 14% of the Earth's land surface, now they cover a bare 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years" Moreover, deforestation which is the act of removing forests and plants from the land affected the climate change "Between 2015 and 2020, the rate of deforestation was estimated at 10 million hectares per year, down from 16 million hectares per year in the 1990s. The area of primary forest worldwide has decreased by over 80 million hectares since 1990" (Overpopulation Effects, 2021).
